ticks!
About one month ago, my dog became extremely sick with symptoms such as severe pain in the head and neck area, she yelped in pain just by looking at her. Her temperature was normal, she was eating and drinking, but very anxious and constantly pacing, not resting for a minute, then started seizuring. The symptoms were classic of dog meningitis, the only way to confirm this was a spinal tap and my doctor referred us to a neurologist, of course this happened on a weekend, so we decided on treating the pain, swelling and putting her on antibiotics and sent in blood work. The results, her white blood count was very high indicating that she either had an auto immune disease or a tick borne disease, but was negative on all tick borne diseases. Everyday she was getting better on the antibiotics, and stopped seizuring. Two weeks later we sent more bloodwork in, her bloodwork came back positive for ehrlichia, a tick borne disease. We finished off all meds, weaned her off of prednisone and phenobarbital and she is 100% back to normal! We are seeing more tick related illnesses in the New England area, please use tick prevention.
