prebiotics for dogs and cats,,

| August 29, 2009

FOS, also known as Fructo-oligosaccarides, Prebiotics. Adding FOS in food prevents infectious diarrhea caused by dangerous bacteria in the intestine. FOS also provides nourishment to intestinal cells.

MOS, mannan-oligosaccarides. Having MOS in food promotes balanced bacterial cells in the bowels and is effective in preventing diarrhea.

Probiotics and Prebiotics in dog and cat food - I think this is great!

sugar & starches for cats & dogs,,,

| August 25, 2009

To be digested by cats and dogs, starches have to be well cooked to prevent fermentation in the large intestines if not well cooked this can cause diarrhea. Starches only provide energy.  Sugars have no preventative or curative functions in cats or dogs. If used in excess, sugars can cause obesity and diabetes.

let’s talk about carbs for cats & dogs,,

| August 23, 2009

Carbohydrates are molecules of carbon, oxygen & hydrogen that have chemical characteristics in common. Carbs are mostly vegetable with the exception of blood glucose, glycogen in the muscles and the liver, and milk lactose. All vegetables contain carbohydrates. Cats and Dogs can live without carbohydrates in their food, however carbs do improve the body’s functioning for energy, transit of food, and balancing bacteria flora from the fiber. A balanced diet is the best advice, just like humans!

tick disease

| August 17, 2009

About one month ago, my dog became extremely sick with symptoms such as severe pain in the head and neck area, she yelped in pain just by looking at her. Her temperature was normal, she was eating and drinking, but very anxious and constantly pacing, not resting for a minute, then started seizuring.  The symptoms were classic of dog meningitis, the only way to confirm this was a spinal tap and my doctor referred us to a neurologist, of course this happened on a weekend, so we decided on treating the pain, swelling and putting her on antibiotics and sent in blood work.  The results, her white blood count was very high indicating that she either had an auto immune disease or a tick borne disease, but was negative on all tick borne diseases. Everyday she was getting better on the antibiotics, and stopped seizuring. Two weeks later we sent more bloodwork in, her bloodwork came back positive for ehrlichia, a tick borne disease. We finished off all meds, weaned her off of prednisone and phenobarbital and she is 100% back to normal! We are seeing more tick related illnesses in the New England area, please use tick prevention.

what are people thinking!

| August 13, 2009

An owner called the clinic, her cat was losing hair at the base of it’s tail and on it’s inner thighs so they wanted to euthanize the cat! It was a long conversation about how the cat was an outdoor cat and currently they don’t have it on a flea/tick medication. The suggestion was to try this prevention before they decide to euthanize and that our clinic would not euthanize due to a flea problem. The owner called back and said they did see a flea and a red patch from scratching, again asked how much it would cost to euthanize. The suggestion at this point was to have them contact a shelter for relinquishing their cat. What are people thinking!!

which food?,,,

| August 10, 2009

for many pet owners, the question of what to feed your dog or cat is usually a wonder. Bonemeal tablets and vitamins are key to add for proper nutrition. Preparing diets for your pets can be no more difficult than preparing your own. A diet can include eggs, chicken, hamburg, potato, sardines, cottage cheese, rice, vegetable oil. Here is a sample recipe that supports a caloric intake of a 22 pound dog:

3 eggs large hard boiled, 3 cups potato, cooked with skin, 2 tablespoons sardines, canned, tomato sauce, 1/4 teaspoon salt substitute, 4 bonemeal tablets, 1 multiple vitamin
