Without a doubt, ear cropping is unnecessary surgery. Having said that, my dogs do not require that decision to make but I like the look of  quality cropped ears. I recently came upon another article about banning ear cropping and a response from a DVM:

“We all seem to ignore the fact that there are no wild canines in nature whose ears do not stand up: this after thousands of years of evolution. Floppy ears are the result of hundreds of years of breeding by mankind in order to get results for whatever dog traits the breeders were looking for.”
