When filling the stand with your Christmas tree water, pet owners should be aware of the dangers of Christmas tree water. The experts recommend the following:

No matter how much they love it, your pet should never be allowed to drink the Christmas tree water. The sap leaks from the tree into the Christmas tree water and can make them very sick. In addition, the preservatives that some people add to their Christmas tree water can cause illness in pets of all kinds.

Lemon scented air freshener sprayed around the base of the tree will discourage most animals from getting close enough to drink the Christmas tree water.

If you can’t discourage your pet from getting under the tree, an e-collar is a great way to protect them from the Christmas tree water. Don’t put the collar on your pet — snap it around the base of your tree and they won’t be able to access the water underneath. This makes refreshing the water a little more time-consuming, but ensuring the health of your pet is worth it.

While humans have three receptors in their eye’s retina, dogs only have two and have difficulty distinguishing among green, yellow, orange and red. Dogs interpret blue-green colors as white and those toward the red end of the color spectrum as more and more yellowish. Dogs can differentiate colors in the blue to violet range of the color spectrum and recognize the diference between black, white and some shades of gray.

When you are planning your pet for air travel, always check with your airlines for the specific rules. Be certain that the pet carrier is approved with that airline as well. One step further is what most people don’t think of. You need to check with the city, state or country that you are arriving at to have the proper health certificate and proof of vaccines. Some areas require a treatment of parasite control or fecal screen within a timeframe upon entering. All these steps are needed to avoid a quarantine.

Fear and anxiety can be a real problem for pet owners. There are methods of training that can be found through your veterinarian. There are a number of tools available as well.

Head collars, such as the Gentle Leader Head Collar are often necessary to gently redirect the focus of your dog’s attention at the time of anxiousness.

Clicker training can be used during disensitization, response and to help build general confidence.

D.A. P. Collar. These collars have appeasing pheromones (smells) that compare to a lactating bitch that calms her pups.

Calming Cap. This is designed to help decrease a dog’s anxiety levels in stressfull moments. The cap’s sheer fabric window makes the dogs vision unclear.
